About The Fort Ramgarh Heritage Hotel

Background And Ancestry: Ramgarh Was One Of The Independent (“Khud-Mukhtyar”) Cis-Sutlej States In Punjab. It Was Ruled By The Chandel Rajputs, Whose Lineage Dates Back To The Ramayana And Mahabharata Eras. The Chandels Originally Had Their Power Base In Bundelkhand (Madhya Pradesh) And Ruled Central India During The Medieval Period Before Prithviraj Chauhan. They Are Known For Building The World-Famous Khajuraho Temples. Renowned Warriors Like Aalah-Udal Belonged To The Chandel Clan, Celebrated In Folk Songs. Migration And Establishment: Around 1,300 Years Ago, Ancestors Of The Ramgarh Family Migrated From Bundelkhand To Punjab. They Established The State Of Kot Kahloor. The Capital Later Shifted To Bilaspur. Approximately 390 Years Ago, A Branch Of The Bilaspur Royal Family Founded Ramgarh. Survival During Anarchy: In The 1760S, During Regional Anarchy, Ramgarh Was One Of Only Three States (Along With Raipur And Kotaha) That Remained Unscathed. This Fact Is Documented In The Ambala District Gazette Of 1886. Rulers And Expansion: Subsequent Rulers Of Ramgarh Enhanced The State's Glory And Territory Through Military Courage And Exploits. Maharaja Ranjit Singh’S Campaigns: Between 1806 And 1808, Maharaja Ranjit Singh Led Raids On Ludhiana, Nalagarh, And Ambala. He Announced Intentions To Annex All Territory Up To The Yamuna River. However, Local Chiefs, Including Those Of Ramgarh, Resisted Fiercely, Forcing Him To Abandon His Plans. On April 25, 1809, Ranjit Singh Signed An Agreement With The British, Surrendering Acquisitions South Of The Sutlej. The British Government’S Proclamation In May 1809 Recognized The Cis-Sutlej Chiefs As Sole Owners Of Their Territories, Limiting Ranjit Singh’S Powers. Autonomy Of Cis-Sutlej Chiefs: Each Chief Had Absolute Civil, Criminal, And Financial Jurisdiction Within Their Territory. Their Authority Was Subject Only To The General Supervision Of The British Agent To The Governor-General. Resistance To British Rule: Ramgarh Strongly Opposed British Rule, Described By The British As “Passive Obstruction Or Open Hostility.” After The British Annexed Punjab In 1849, The Power And Freedoms Of Most Cis-Sutlej States, Including Ramgarh, Were Significantly Reduced. Ramgarh Fort And Heritage: Originally, Ramgarh Fort Was Much Larger; Currently, Only The Zenankhana (Women’S Chamber) Remains. The Fort Has 18-Foot-Thick Walls. Despite Deterioration Over Time, The Royal Family Continues To Live There, Restoring And Renovating It. It Has Been Converted Into A Heritage Resort. The Resort Is Notable As The First Heritage Hotel In Haryana And Punjab. It Uniquely Serves Only Pure Vegetarian Food And No Liquor.
